Audi has officially announced a hybrid version of its Q5 compact SUV. Reports of a hybrid version of the Audi Q5 have been circling the internet rumor mill since 2008.
Audi says the Q5 Hybrid will make its debut in late 2010 – possibly indicating a Los Angeles Auto Show reveal – with sales set to kick off in early 2011. United States sales are a sure bet but it remains to be seen if the Q5 Hybrid will be offered in Europe where diesels still reign supreme.

No technical specs were released for the Q5 Hybrid but it is believed the SUV will employ nickel metal hydride batteries rather than a more advanced – and expensive – lithium-ion batteries. The Q5 Hybrid will be Audi’s first full hybrid model.

Audi still prefers diesel technology to hybrid technology – saying the company is developing “hybrids in order to show people that we are able to do them” – but the Q5 Hybrid should help the German automaker in the U.S. market, both in terms of sales and fuel economy regulations.

2011 Audi R18 TDI
INTRODUCTION:Since its debut in 1999, the brand with the Four Rings has won the world's most important endurance race as many as nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. In doing so, Audi has equaled this feat in the race's roll of honor with Ferrari. With the new R18, which was presented at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on the evening of Friday, December 10, 2010, Audi is aiming for its tenth Le Mans success in 2011.

HIGHLIGHTS:The R18's headlights, which are the first to completely consist of LEDs with optimized amount of light, are a technical highlight. The new generation of headlights was developed in close cooperation between Audi Sport and the Technical Development (TE) division of AUDI AG and by using at Le Mans, will be prepared for future use in production vehicles. Audi's light designers had the chance to make their mark on the development as well: The LEDs of the daytime light form the shape of a "1" which is intended to inspire associations with Audi's historic brand logo.

SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Significantly smaller engines than those used before will be prescribed at Le Mans in 2011 as the rule makers aim to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power. By opting for a 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit, Audi retains the diesel concept that saw its first victorious fielding in 2006. "From our point of view, the TDI continues to be the most efficient technology," says Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. "There are good reasons why the share of TDI units among Audi's production models is as high as it is."
  • Another new development is the six-speed transmission in the R18 which has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine. With regard to the chassis Audi Sport wants to live up to its promise, expressed in the brand's "Vorsprung durch Technik" tagline. Unlike those of the closed Le Mans prototypes, the carbon fiber monocoque of the R18 does not consist of two halves but features a single-component design. This saves weight and increases stiffness.

DESIGN:The Audi R18 has been designed for progressive electrification, which Audi Sport is planning to drive forward step by step. "But efficiency is always the crucial factor for us," says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "No matter which form of energy recovery we may choose the key aspect for Audi - in motorsport as well as on the production side of the house - is that it provides a true advantage."

2011 Audi Autonomous TTS Pikes Peak
INTRODUCTION:The autonomous Audi TTS built by Volkswagen Group Electronics Research Lab, Stanford University and Audi has taken an important first step toward its ultimate goal: participating in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The self-driving TTS officially completed a test run – all the way to the 14,110 foot summit – earlier this year, clocking a time of 27 minutes, which is pretty good considering that race officials typically expect a human driver to do it in around 17 minutes.

HIGHLIGHTS:The new emphasis for the project also honors quattro® technology, which has played an instrumental role in Audi racing successes, has served as a leading example of the progressive engineering found in Audi passenger vehicles and is integral to the handling of the Audi TTS research car. This year marks the 30th anniversary of quattro on the world automotive stage.

SPECIFICATIONS:Audi says that the car used a combination of brand-new software, algorithms and hardware to tackle one of the world's most challenging hill climbs. The 12.42 mile course is a gauntlet of tarmac and loose gravel that snakes upward with a number of instant switchbacks. According to Audi, the autonomous TTS managed to hit a top speed of 47 mph during one stretch. Hit the jump for the full press release.

DESIGN:
  • For the design that was selected, the goal was to pay homage to the past, while conveying the leading-edge technology that defines the TTS research car. Designers decided to give the rally car themes from the 1980s a forward-looking twist, said Sangyup Lee, Chief Designer (Group Exterior) at VW/Audi Group Studio California.
  • The original rally cars, for example didn't feature a large four rings logo on their roofs. But the designers used that design cue from modern Audi DTM racing cars in Europe so the brand image would be evident in aerial photos and videos.
  • "We were very much inspired by the Pikes Peak race cars," noted Raul Cenan, Lead Designer on the TTS project. "But there was very different technology used in those cars overall. So we decided to go with more modern elements that were heritage-inspired."

CONCLUSION:Autonomous Audi TTS Pikes Peak plans to make a Guinness Book of World Records land speed attempt at the El Mirage Lake dry-lake bed in southern California or another nearby location.

2011 Audi A8L
INTRODUCTION:The new A8 known as A8 L W12 is now 130 mm longer and 2 mm higher than the present version which gives a lot of leg space and cabin space in rear. Comes with longer rear doors, there are not less than 25 motors powering the new four zone air conditioning. Luxury and comfort always comes first!!
HIGHLIGHTS:2011 Audi A8L - the long wheelbase version of the new generation A8. The 2011 Audi A8L has measures 5,267 millimeters (17.28 ft) in length which is 130 mm (0.43 ft) longer than the standard version. The 2011 Audi A8L is the same width as the regular version, has a 3,122 mm (10.24 ft) wheelbase and is 2 mm (0.08 in) higher than the standard wheelbase model.
SPECIFICATIONS:

  • The new 6.3 liter W12 engine develops 493 hp and 625 Nm at 3,250 rpm, Coupled to quattro four-wheel drive via Audi’s clever new eight-speed transmission can shoot up the speed from 0-100 Kmph in mere 4.9 seconds. The top speed goes to 250 Kmph. Despite the new engine being bigger and 50bhp more powerful than the previous 6.0-litre version, Audi says its average fuel consumption is improved by 12%.
  • There are numerous executive gadgets on board to enjoy the ride. With the help of Audi’s MMI navigation plus system, the driver can enter a destination or phone number by writing it on the screen with a finger. The navigation system reads the road conditions and topography, before feeding this data to systems that control the car’s automatic transmission and adaptive cruise control which keeps the vehicle speed to maximum 250 Kmph. There’s also upgraded technology to help the driver change lane, avoid accidental lane changes, and a pedestrian warning system that can help avoid collisions.
DESIGN:The 2011 Audi A8L has a body built from aluminum using the Audi Space Frame (ASF) principle and therefore weighing about 40 percent less than a comparable steel body. The ASF body structure is built up from cast elements, extruded sections and sheet aluminum, with integral B-posts made from form-hardened ultra-high strength steel. This body’s tremendous rigidity is the key to the car’s precise handling, low interior noise levels and high passive safety for the occupants in the event of an accident.

HIGHLIGHTS:The 2011 Audi A8's direct-injection V-8 gives it plenty of power, and its eight-speed transmission gets it good highway fuel economy. Active suspension, all-wheel-drive, and dynamic steering make it handle exceedingly well. The navigation system incorporates beautifully detailed 3D maps and next year will integrate with Google maps. The audio system delivers clean sound.
FEATURES:

*It is equipped with excellent handling characteristics for a smooth driving and riding experience.

*It is built with heated front and rear seats so you can stay comfortable all throughout the ride.

*It boasts a generous list of features, both standard and innovative ones alike.

*It has roomy interiors and huge cabin space to take up a huge amount of passengers, making it ideal for road trips and family vacation too.

*The unique winter weather capability is one of its major strengths, thus enabling you to drive safely and efficiently even through the toughest of environmental conditions.

*With its V8 engine offering a top of the line torque performance, this could easily be categorized as one of the fastest sedans in the market today.

*Its exterior features deliver quite well in styling and in offering a luxurious appeal to the vehicle.

ENGINE:The 2011 A8 goes on sale this fall at a starting price of about $90,000. The A8 will be available here with just one engine when it launches: the long-lived direct-injection, 4.2-liter DOHC V-8. As installed in this third-generation A8, the V-8 gains 22 hp and 4 lb-ft of torque over its previous iteration, with output now totaling 372 hp and 328 lb-ft. The horsepower figure is just enough to make it the least powerful in the segment, ceding eight ponies to the Lexus LS460 and 10 to the S550. Audi says the A8 returns 13-percent-better fuel economy than does its predecessor, which translates roughly to 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for the new car.

DESIGN:
From the outside, the 2011 A8 is clearly cut from four-ringed cloth. The tail almost completely mimics the rear of the latest A4, and the corporate grille is in full effect, even if it has grown from a goatee into more of a mini-beard. All four corners share a similar squared-off element, and the front quarters, if analyzed closely, hint at the upcoming Bentley Mulsanne (some interoffice cribbing, maybe?). The LED headlamps are distinctive and can vary the depth of their beams based on the proximity of oncoming traffic. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches to 20.
All A8 models get that ZF-supplied eight-speed automatic transmission, which really breathes new life into the old 4.2, and all have manumatic shifting and paddles on the steering wheel. We estimate the A8 will scoot to 60 mph in the mid-five-second range—middle of the pack in terms of acceleration. But what it lacks in outright speed, the A8 makes up for in sporting demeanor.

INTRODUCTION:The 2011 Audi A7 is a stylish new addition into the market, which is designed as a low-roof sedan. There were also quite a few speculations that this new model will come with a disguised concept version and operates on a fast-forward manner to suit the tastes and preference of its modern buyers. It will be highly based on the midranged A6 model and is expected to release this year.

HIGHLIGHTS:The new A8 sedan has rewarding design details too, though not nearly as many as the A7. Compared with rivals from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus, the A8's sales are low but the A7 can act as a supplement for Audi's high-end sales.

SPECIFICATION:2011 Audi A7 will slot between the A6 and the flagship A8/S8 sedans in both size and price. Headline features will include standard Audi Quattro all-wheel drive, multilink rear suspension, an alphabet soup of electronic driving aids, the usual gorgeous Audi interior-with seating for four only-and unique styling with a sweeping fastback roofline and a hunkered-down wheels-at-the-corners stance. The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 making 300 horsepower to serve as the main engine. Accelerating from 0-to-62 mph will take 5.6 seconds, Audi says. On the more fuel-efficient side, some markets will get a 3.0-liter diesel that will achieve the U.S. equivalent of about 44 mpg by European standards. All A7s get a stop-start system to save fuel. The body is composed of a steel and aluminum mix, and the car is about 15 percent lighter than it would have been were the A7 made completely from steel, according to Audi.

DESIGN:Among the headline features for the 2011 Audi A7 is the Quattro all wheel drive, electronic driving aids, multilink rear suspension, and gorgeous interiors that is a staple for the Audi brand. There were also a few advanced incorporations into this vehicle model that enable it to compete against the premium ranks in the market, such as lane departure or blind spot warning systems, sports seat, high efficiency LED lighting on the front and rear sides of the vehicle, and home quality infotainment system.
